    Intraoperative Quantification of Bone Perfusion in Lower Extremity Injury Surgery

    Orthopaedic surgery is one of the most common surgical categories. In particular, lower extremity injuries sustained from trauma can be complex and life-threatening injuries that are addressed through orthopaedic trauma surgery. Timely evaluation and surgical debridement following lower extremity injury is essential, because devitalized bones and tissues will result in high surgical site infection rates. However, the current clinical judgment of what constitutes “devitalized tissue” is subjective and dependent on surgeon experience, so it is necessary to develop imaging techniques for guiding surgical debridement, in order to control infection rates and to improve patient outcome. In this thesis work, computational models of fluorescence-guided debridement in lower extremity injury surgery will be developed, by quantifying bone perfusion intraoperatively using Dynamic contrast-enhanced fluorescence imaging (DCE-FI) system. Perfusion is an important factor of tissue viability, and therefore quantifying perfusion is essential for fluorescence-guided debridement. In Chapters 3-7 of this thesis, we explore the performance of DCE-FI in quantifying perfusion from benchtop to translation: We proposed a modified fluorescent microsphere quantification technique using cryomacrotome in animal model. This technique can measure bone perfusion in periosteal and endosteal separately, and therefore to validate bone perfusion measurements obtained by DCE-FI; We developed pre-clinical rodent contaminated fracture model to correlate DCE-FI with infection risk, and compare with multi-modality scanning; Furthermore in clinical studies, we investigated first-pass kinetic parameters of DCE-FI and arterial input functions for characterization of perfusion changes during lower limb amputation surgery; We conducted the first in-human use of dynamic contrast-enhanced texture analysis for orthopaedic trauma classification, suggesting that spatiotemporal features from DCE-FI can classify bone perfusion intraoperatively with high accuracy and sensitivity; We established clinical machine learning infection risk predictive model on open fracture surgery, where pixel-scaled prediction on infection risk will be accomplished. In conclusion, pharmacokinetic and spatiotemporal patterns of dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging show great potential for quantifying bone perfusion and prognosing bone infection. The thesis work will decrease surgical site infection risk and improve successful rates of lower extremity injury surgery

    A new method calculating load balance of sliding bearing by using neural network PID algorithm

    Aiming at low efficiency of existing sliding bearing load balance calculation, a new method that based on neural network proportional-integral-derivative (PID) algorithm is proposed for the first time, in which a compound control algorithm combining neural network and PID algorithm is applied. In this new method, the load error is taken as the input of the system, and the eccentricity of the bearing is used as the input of the controller, and the output of the system is the oil film force of the bearing. Comparing with traditional method, calculation results show that: the number of iterations calculated by neural network PID algorithm is less than traditional one and has higher efficiency and stronger adaptability under different loads

    Research on vibration characteristics of marine power-spilt gear system

    In order to carry out a more in-depth study on the vibration characteristics of the marine power-spilt gear system, a nonlinear dynamic model of a certain type of marine gearbox was established, taking into account factors such as dynamic backlash and time-varying mesh stiffness. The numerical simulation method was used to calculate the variation of the system vibration response with input speed, the torsional stiffness of the linkage shaft and the stiffness of the output shaft under different backlach. The results show that the system will occur resonance as the input speed increases; the torsional stiffness of the linkage axis has an optimal value, so that the vibration response amplitude of the system is the smallest; as the support stiffness of the output shaft increases, the vibration acceleration of the output shaft does not change much, while the vibration displacement is significantly reduced

    Developing Multifunctional Ultra-High Performance Concrete via Incorporating Hybrid Steel Wires and Fibers

    Stainless steel wires (SSWs) with micro diameter and stainless steel fiber (SFs) with millimeter diameter were incorporated together to develop multifunctional ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in this study. The addition of 0.2 vol.% of SSWs can already improve interface between matrix and SFs, reduce the microcracks in UHPC caused by shrinkage and initial load, increase SFs’ distribution and orientation with their high flexibility, thus enhancing the flexural toughness and resulting in the occurrence of multiple cracking flexural failure mode of UHPC with less than 2.0 vol.% SFs. The hybrid SWs and SFs reinforced UHPC possesses low electrical resistivity and can sense its initial cracking, residual flexural loading and cracking development by the measured fractional change in electrical resistivity. This is mainly coming from the inhibition effect of SWs on microcracks and the extensively conductive pathway formed by both SWs and SFs. The multiple cracking failure mode under flexural load and the self-sensing capacity to monitor crack initiation and propagation of UHPC with low content hybrid wires and fibers is important to develop multifunctional UHPC, thus providing a new approach for maintaining sustainable development of infrastructures

    Responses of root system architecture to water stress at multiple levels: A meta-analysis of trials under controlled conditions

    Plants are exposed to increasingly severe drought events and roots play vital roles in maintaining plant survival, growth, and reproduction. A large body of literature has investigated the adaptive responses of root traits in various plants to water stress and these studies have been reviewed in certain groups of plant species at a certain scale. Nevertheless, these responses have not been synthesized at multiple levels. This paper screened over 2000 literatures for studies of typical root traits including root growth angle, root depth, root length, root diameter, root dry weight, root-to-shoot ratio, root hair length and density and integrates their drought responses at genetic and morphological scales. The genes, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and hormones that are involved in the regulation of drought response of the root traits were summarized. We then statistically analyzed the drought responses of root traits and discussed the underlying mechanisms. Moreover, we highlighted the drought response of 1-D and 2-D root length density (RLD) distribution in the soil profile. This paper will provide a framework for an integrated understanding of root adaptive responses to water deficit at multiple scales and such insights may provide a basis for selection and breeding of drought tolerant crop lines

    THE PREVENTIVE EFFECT AND ENHANCE IMMUNITY FUNCTION OF BU-ZHONG-YI-QIWAN ON S180 TUMOR MICE.

    Background: To evaluate the preventive effect and enhance immunity functions of Bu-zhong-yi-qi wan in vivo. Materials and Methods: S180 tumor mice model was established by subcutaneous injection a dose of 0.2 ml (1×107/ml) at the right oxter. The inhibitory rates, spleen indexes and thymus indexes were calculated. Splenic lymphocyte proliferative activity assay and phagocytosis activity of peritoneal macrophages were done. Interferon (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL-2) and tumor necrotic factor (TNF-α) in serum were detected. Results: In the S180 tumor-bearing mice, Bu-zhong-yi-qi wan with medium-dose (975 mg/kg, 100 mg/l) had potent preventive effect and anti-tumor effect, macrophage phagocytosis and Con A-stimulated splenocyte proliferation were increased as compared with model control treatment. Bu-zhong-yi-qi wan could take part in the immune response by promoting the proliferation and differentiation of Tcells, increasing the activity of the macrophages, inducing the generation of cell factor IL-2, TNF-α, IFN-γ. Conclusion: It proved that Bu-zhong-yi-qi wan of medium-dose had great preventive effect and could enhance immunity function

    Unraveling Controversies Over Civic Honesty Measurement: An Extended Field Replication in China

    Cohn et al. (2019) conducted a wallet drop experiment in 40 countries to measure civic honesty around the globe, which has received worldwide attention but also sparked controversies over using the email response rate as the sole metric of civic honesty. Relying on the lone measurement may overlook cultural differences in behaviors that demonstrate civic honesty. To investigate this issue, we conducted an extended replication study in China, utilizing email response and wallet recovery to assess civic honesty. We found a significantly higher level of civic honesty in China, as measured by the wallet recovery rate, than reported in the original study, while email response rates remained similar. To resolve the divergent results, we introduce a cultural dimension, individualism versus collectivism, to study civic honesty across diverse cultures. We hypothesize that cultural differences in individualism and collectivism could influence how individuals prioritize actions when handling a lost wallet, such as contacting the wallet owner or safeguarding the wallet. In reanalyzing Cohn et al.\u27s data, we found that email response rates were inversely related to collectivism indices at the country level. However, our replication study in China demonstrated that the likelihood of wallet recovery was positively correlated with collectivism indicators at the provincial level. Consequently, relying solely on email response rates to gauge civic honesty in cross-country comparisons may neglect the vital individualism versus collectivism dimension. Our study not only helps reconcile the controversy surrounding Cohn et al.\u27s influential field experiment but also furnishes a fresh cultural perspective to evaluate civic honesty

    Molecular epidemiology and clinical characteristics of respiratory syncytial virus in hospitalized children during winter 2021–2022 in Bengbu, China

    ObjectiveThis study aimed to study the molecular epidemiology and clinical characteristics of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection from hospitalized children with ARTI in Bengbu.MethodsOne hundred twenty-four nasopharyngeal swab specimens and clinical data from children with ARTI cases were collected in Bengbu, China, during winter 2021–2022. The samples were detected by qPCR of 13 respiratory viruses. Phylogenetic analysis was constructed using MEGA 7.0. All analyses were performed using SAS software, version 9.4.ResultsIn winter 2021–2022, URTI, NSCAP, SCAP, and bronchiolitis accounted for 41.03%, 27.35%, 17.09%, and 14.53% of hospitalized children in Bengbu, China. The detection rates of the top three were RSV (41.94%), ADV (5.65%), and FluB (5.65%) in hospitalized children through 13 virus detection. RSV is the main pathogen of hospitalized children under 2 years old. Forty-eight sequences of G protein of RSV were obtained through PCR amplification, including RSV-A 37 strains and RSV-B 11 strains. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all RSV-A and RSV-B were ON1 and BA9 genotypes, respectively. ON1 genotypes were further divided into two clades. The majority of ON1 strains formed a unique genetic clade with T113I, V131D, N178 G, and H258Q mutations. Furthermore, RSV infection was an independent risk factor for ventilator use (OR = 9.55, 95% CI 1.87–48.64).ConclusionThere was a high incidence of RSV among hospitalized children during winter 2021–2022 in Bengbu with ON1 and BA9 being the dominant strains. This study demonstrated the molecular epidemiological characteristics of RSV in children with respiratory infections in Bengbu, China
